Costa Rica taxes online gambling to fight criminal activities

Costa Rica is set to implement new taxes on online gambling activities operated in the country. The 5% tax should support the fight against rising crime while also financing education in the Central American nation. The idea comes from the new president of the country, Laura Chinchilla Miranda, who plans to combat crime and corruption with the income from the new taxes introduced for online casino, poker or sportsbook activities based in Costa Rica. Anyway Gambling operations from the Central American country are excluded from taxes.

Presently approximately 380 firms, mainly focused on the American market, are licensed in Costa Rica and turn over more than hundreds of millions of Dollars annually. Weirdly many of the online gambling operators support a gambling tax because it would give some legitimacy to their operations, and officially give online gambling operators a legal status within the country. The new bill that would add a tax to all forms of gambling could be made legal by the middle of September.
